Have you ever been scuba diving and asked yourself, “What was that?”…
The PADI Project AWARE Fish Identification Specialty course provides you with the fish identification basics so that, next time, you will know the answer.
You’ll find you enjoy your dives even more when you recognize the creatures that you see.
During the theory lessons, held by our Marine Biologist and PADI Instructor Vittoria, she will surely transmit you her great passion and love for the creatures and organisms that populate the underwater world. We thought it was worth to make the most out of her, so she will not only talk to you about the most common species of fishes you could find in our waters, but she will take you through a whole journey of discovery of the colourful variety of the underwater life.
The fun part about this course, is that you can use the skills you have learned on every scuba diving vacation you will have in the future, because once you learned the principles of fish identification, you will be able to know, in general, what type of fish you are looking at, wherever you find yourself!
PADI Fish Aware Identification Course
For example, a butterfly fish in the Caribbean has a similar shape to a butterfly fish in Southeast Asia, but their colours and markings maybe wildly different. If you know what fish family it belongs to, it becomes much easier to look up the local name somewhere, or at least you will be able to intelligently ask the local scuba instructor what you saw… That works much better than asking about a “yellow thingy with a funny tail fin.”
During the two dives of this speciality course, you gain hands-on (okay, eyes-on) experience in looking for and identifying the fascinating fishes you see underwater. On top of this, with our deluxe version of this speciality, Vittoria will teach you how to recognize, in general, ALL different types of marine creatures: after our deluxe speciality course you will be able to tell if you are looking at a sponge, or a coral or a mollusc or a crustacean, you will know the difference between a shark and a bone fish… The more you can think off, the best!
You will learn:
Which characteristics you should look at in order to know what type of fish you are watching
Name and main characteristics of the most common local fish families
Variety and main characteristics of the main clusters of the underwater world’s creatures
Funny facts and curiosities about marine creatures and their everyday life
Fish surveying techniques and strategies
